By analysing the roles and problems faced by international regimes
as major players in global health governance, this book looks into
the root causes of the often insufficient supply of global public
goods for health and of the deficiencies in current global health
governance. Combining several different methods of analysis and
methodologies, this book sketches out the landscape of
international public health governance involving a range of
international actors. These include the World Health Organization,
the World Trade Organization, the Biological Weapons Convention and
international human rights regimes. Through a novel theoretical
framework that synthesises the theory of securitisation, public
goods and international regimes, the author then focuses on factors
that have resulted in observed deficiencies in global health
governance. Based on these examinations, the book also tries to
explore feasible approaches for institutional refinement and
innovations for greater effectiveness in global health governance.
The book will appeal to academics and policy makers interested in
global health, international relations and international law.

This book compares the rapid development of South Korea over the
past 70 years with selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa to
assess what factors contributed to the country's success story, and
why it is that countries that were comparable in the past continue
to experience challenges in achieving and sustaining economic
growth. In the 1950s, South Korea's GDP per capita was $876,
roughly comparable with that of Cote d'Ivoire and somewhat below
Ghana's. The country's subsequent transformation from a
war-ravaged, international aid-dependent economy to the 13th
largest economy in the world has been the focus of considerable
international admiration and attention. But how was it that South
Korea succeeded in multiplying its GDP per capita by a factor of
23, while other Less Developed Countries continue to experience
challenges? This book compares South Korea's politics of
development and foreign assistance with that of Ghana, Nigeria, and
Zambia, which were also major recipients of the U.S. aid, to
investigate the specific contexts that made it possible for South
Korea to achieve success. Overall, this book argues that effective
state capacity in South Korea's domestic and international politics
provided an anchor for diplomatic engagement with donors and guided
domestic political actors in the effective use of aid for economic
development. This book will be of interest to researchers and
students working on development, comparative political economy, and
foreign aid, and to policy makers and practitioners looking for a
greater understanding of comparative development trajectories.

To celebrate Singapore's fiftieth anniversary for its independence
from Malaysia in 2015, 35 students, academics and activists came
together to discuss and write about pioneering Singaporean human
rights activists and their under-reported stories in Singapore. The
city-state is known for its remarkable economic success while
having strict laws on individual freedom in the name of national
security, public order and racial harmony. Singapore's tough stance
on human rights, however, does not negate the long and persistent
existence of a human rights society that is little known to the
world until today. This volume, composed of nine distinctive
chapters, records a history of human rights activists, their
campaigns, main contentions with the government, survival
strategies and other untold stories in Singapore's first 50 years
of state-building.
Across East Asia, intra-regional migration is more prevalent than
inter-regional movements, and the region's diverse histories,
geopolitics, economic development, ethnic communities, and natural
environments make it an excellent case study for examining the
relationship between irregular migration and human security.
Irregular migration can be broadly defined as people's mobility
that is unauthorised or forced, and this book expands on the
existing migration-security nexus by moving away from the
traditional state security lens, and instead, shifting the focus to
human security. With in-depth empirical country case studies from
the region, including China, Japan, North Korea, the Philippines,
Burma/Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand and Singapore, the contributors
to this book develop a human security approach to the study of
irregular migration. In cases of irregular migration, such as
undocumented labour migrants, asylum seekers, internally displaced
people, trafficked persons, and smuggled people, human security is
the cause and/or effect of migration in both sending and receiving
countries. By adopting a human security lens, the chapters provide
striking insights into the motivations, vulnerabilities and
insecurities of migrants; the risks, dangers and illegality they
are exposed to during their journeys; as well as the potential or
imagined threats they pose to the new host countries. This
multidisciplinary book is based on extensive fieldwork and
interviews with migrants, aid workers, NGO activists and
immigration officers. As such, it will appeal to students and
scholars of Asian politics and security, as well as those with
interests in international relations, social policy, law, geography
and migration.

Does nationalism lead to interstate war? This book challenges the
existing presumption about the link between nationalism and war and
systematically investigates how popular nationalism affects a
country's decision to launch military aggression. In doing so, the
book makes a provocative and novel claim that popular nationalism
has not only a conflict-inducing effect but also a restraining
effect and identifies the conditions under which popular
nationalism causes war. Specifically, the book claims that popular
nationalism leads to war only when leaders who confront it are very
confident about their chance of achieving complete victory in
conflict or they are politically vulnerable. If these two
conditions are not met, popular nationalism has a restraining
effect, making leaders seek the status quo and avoid the use of
force. The book first shows the restraining effect of popular
nationalism focusing on China through a survey experiment and an
in-depth case study on the territorial dispute between China and
Japan in the East China Sea. It then offers a comprehensive
historical and contemporary analysis of when popular nationalism's
restraining effect turns into a conflict-inducing one through case
studies on the War of 1812 and the Falklands War. The book provides
important insights into whether popular nationalism could put great
powers like the United States and China on a collision course and
offers broad policy implications for how we can prevent war driven
by popular nationalism.
